Diving is a wonderful way to distract yourself in you free time and learn many new things along the way. When diving you enjoy some mild exercise, get the unforgettable experience of being underwater in a totally new world and get to know more people to share your enthusiasm with.

If you decided to start diving then you will need to get some scuba diving equipment to help you out in this exciting venture out into the wild waters. Start with simple things like suits, fins and scuba diving masks and get to more complicated stuff as you grow more experienced. Some people insist on getting scuba certification but others simply enjoy the fun of being out in the sea and exploring the things hidden away from most of us. Diving is good for your mind and your mental health. The eerie beauty of the sea floor can be explored only with the help of deep diving techniques and people say nothing can be compared to the feeling of joy you get out there. But always remember about safety and don’t overestimate your abilities. Stay safe and come back for more!

* The Essentials of Scuba Diving Gear

Your most basic tools for scuba diving gear include a wetsuit, a face and eye mask, booties and fins, and an oxygen tank. These tools will make your trip memorable or very unpleasant depending if you chose to gear yourself the right way or not.

The most important attribute of a <a rel=nofollow" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Z78H58?ie=UTF8&tag=scuba-diving-heaven-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000Z78H58">wetsuit is that it maintains the temperature of your body no matter of the temperature of the water. If the water is too cold your body could go into hypothermia, therefore, it is extremely important to wear this item of your scuba diving gear at all times. Also, you never know what temperature changes you many run into.

Getting the right face and eye mask for scuba diving is essential. Without them you will not be able to see or breathe in the water. Booties and fins make swimming in the water easier and smoother, therefore, I suggest them at all times no matter how far below you plan to go and for how long.

The oxygen tank is probably the most essential piece of scuba diving gear. Without it you are just diving. Different size oxygen tanks have different quantities of oxygen supply and that is something you must take note of, as you need to return to the surface before you run out of oxygen. There are special watches available which have a bezel set on the outside part of the watch, which allows you to keep track of the time under the water. This is a great piece of scuba diving gear to obtain if you are serious about the sport.

* Acquiring the Right Scuba Diving Gear

Wearing scuba diving gear on your dives allows you to venture into deeper waters, explore unknown destinations, protect your body from the elements, and minimize your impact on the underwater environment. If you take a diving class the scuba diving gear will most likely be provided for you. Scuba diving gear can also be acquired at your local dive shop. This will allow you to ask a pro any questions you may have.

Another wonderful resource for scuba diving gear is the online community. You can browse all the different options that exist in scuba diving gear, as well as ask questions of other divers on chat boards. Asking the people who use the scuba diving gear is always one of the best sources of information.

Luckily, there are many places you can obtain a prescription scuba diving mask for just his purpose. Since water automatically magnifies a very specific prescription will be needed to account for your natural vision and that the effect of being under water. Thus having a prescription scuba mask created precisely for your needs is essential.

* Elements of a Scuba Diving Mask

All scuba diving masks have these basic features in common. A scuba diving mask tends to be quite large and square shaped, and come up high on the face. A scuba diving mask should go across the forehead reaching as low as the nose and the rubber that surrounds the areas of the mask in order to help to fit tightly against the face thereby providing a seal that is watertight.

On the other hand, a prescription scuba diving mask works by either having the entire lens area as being a prescription lens, or having the Rx lens to be inserted separately between the mask and the eyes of the wearer. Moreover, the lens in the diving mask is usually made out of glass, acrylic, regular ophthalmic plastic or polycarbonate.

Not all contact lenses are ideal for use in scuba diving. Lenses made of RGPs and the old hard lenses may dig in to the eyes at certain depths due to the increased water pressure. In addition, soft lenses may gather waterborne organisms and thus be contaminated and result in causing disease. It may occur even in pools as well as fresh and saltwater bodies. Thus a prescription scuba diving mask is a necessity if you have any visual impairment.

* Maintaining Your Scuba Diving Mask

In addition to procuring the appropriate mask, you will need to properly care for your mask to prevent it from breaking down from salt-water exposure. Rinsing your scuba diving mask completely in fresh water is a must to keep it in proper condition. A damaged mask could break apart during a site dive, and that would make for difficult exploration.

One of the reasons that rinsing your scuba diving mask after each use is essential is that salt crystals can damage and rust the metal components, while straps and fabrics may decompose and break off completely. The abrasive power of salt can scratch your lens and make gauges in your face mask.

In addition to regular rinsing of your scuba diving mask, you should inspect the straps and purge valve for damage consistently. Stretch the straps to look for any cracks that might be forming. Check the purge valve for trapped bits of salt and sand. If you see any weaknesses you will want to address them immediately as the integrity of your corrective scuba diving mask is critical to your safety during a dive.

* Fog Free Dive Mask

Once you have your dive mask, keeping it fog free can be challenging. Though some people use saliva (which seems to help some, we found that Aquaseal Sea Drops Anti-Fog & Lens Cleaner really works well. It keeps it much clearer as is much more sanitary. As an added bonus it is used to clean your lenses as well.

Copyright © 2010 Scuba-Diving-Heaven. Visit the original article at http://www.scuba-diving-heaven.com/finding-the-best-wetsuit-for-scuba-diving.html.

Getting a comfortable wetsuit is extremely important. One that is too tight can make you feel like you can’t breathe. Getting one that is made for the type of diving you plan to do will make the difference between a great dive trip and one where you were more concerned with keeping warm (or cool!) than the dive itself.

First you need to determine if you want a wetsuit, semi-dry suit or drysuit. Where you dive will help you decide which is best for you. Wetsuits are best for moderate temperature waters, while drysuits are required for colder dives. If you can afford it, you may desire to get both.

Which Type of Suit is For You?

Warmer diving sites may not need a full wetsuit, with full length arms and legs. Sometimes some kind of spring suit is preferred. A spring suit has shortened arms and/or legs. There are many combinations. Some spring suits have bicep length arm sleeves or even a shoulderless, torso-only design. Some have full length arms, but mid-thigh length pants.

Shorties have short arms and legs (like shorts) but fully cover the torso. Steamers cover all parts of the body except the head, hands and feet. A convertible suit is a steamer with removable arms or legs.

In all designs, suits are measured by the thickness of the neoprene material. A suit designated 3/2 has 3mm (1/10th inch) thick neoprene in the torso, 2mm thick neoprene in the arms and legs. This specification works well for diving in water that is 60F (15.5C) or above. For colder waters, get a thicker suit, such as a 4/3. Some have three numbers – for torso, arms and legs.

Fit is Key

Most importantly, get a suit that fits well. A wetsuit needs to be flexible enough to allow easy breathing and movement under water, without binding. A wide range of movement is essential in the shoulders since you’ll be using your arms to navigate.

Snug is great, squeezing is uncomfortable. If the blood flow near the surface of the skin is restricted, you are likely to get sore and fatigued sooner. You’ll want to shorten your dive instead of enjoying your dive to the fullest extent.

All About Seams

Some seams are glued or welded. Choose a suit with the least amount of seams if possible. For the seams that are in the suit, make sure they are well made and secure. When examining seams know:

Splits in material commonly happen at a seam.

Poorly made seams can introduce sore spots.

A suit may be less flexible at the seam if not manufactured properly.

Seams are required in some wetsuit designs to provide extra features. Removable headgear, integrated knife holders, hydrolock collars, fireskin linings for wicking… the list of innovations in modern suits is endless. However, a well made suit has the smallest number and the most ’seamless’ seams.

Dry Suits

Drysuits enable divers to safely and comfortably dive for longer periods in colder weather. Cold water, even as warm as 50F (10C) can kill an adult within minutes. Having a good drysuit under cooler conditions is vital. There are special certifications for wearing a drysuit to fully understand how to wear and care for one.

Drysuits have attached booties to seal off the feat, as well as watertight seals around the wrists and neck. They’re worn with thermal underwear and the sealing keeps it dry, while the wicking of the underwear keeps moisture off the skin. As you know, a standard wetsuit allows a layer of moisture that is warmed by skin.

Take your time and try on lots of models in order to get the one that fits and moves as near perfect as possible. A good wetsuit will last years, so it’s worth taking the extra time to get just the right one.

Copyright © 2010 Scuba-Diving-Heaven. Visit the original article at http://www.scuba-diving-heaven.com/scuba-diving-apparel-fun-and-functional.html.

Whether you love diving or love someone who does, shopping for scuba diving apparel can be a lot of fun. Scuba diving apparel may include masks, fins, tanks, wetsuits, diving-related t-shirts, and jackets. As a diver, you know that many of these items are necessities for the sport. However, so many options abound that choosing your particular wetsuit or fin is a very personal decision.

When giving scuba diving apparel as a gift, divers are easy to buy for. Just make sure you ask about the return policy if you think your choice may not be exactly what the person would choose. Returning an unused wetsuit with the tags still on for a different size or color should not be an issue. In addition to wearable scuba diving apparel divers often enjoy receiving vanity plates, stickers, photos, posters, cameras as gifts.

* Scuba Diving Apparel for Your Home

While scuba diving apparel generally refers to clothing and wearable items, there are a number of diving related options for home décor. Diving merchandise almost always has a red flag with a diagonal white stripe on it. This is the international “diver down” flag. Divers leave a buoy at the surface if their dive to indicate their presence to others. You’ll find this logo on numerous household items.

Photographs of underwater scenes can make good presents for divers as well. If the diver has taken a picture he or she is especially proud of, consider having it professionally framed.

* Scuba Diving Apparel to Wear

Many sports and scuba diving stores will offer the apparel you are looking for.

Wetsuits are always a great apparel choice. Every diver needs a wetsuit, and the choices are many. Dive store employees can help you pick out things that all divers need, if you are seeking a gift rather than an item for your personal use. Even if you don’t know the exact color you can ask about a gift card or the return policy.

For the serious diver who likes diving in cold water, a dry suit is often appreciated. These suits are much warmer and more comfortable if diving in cold water. You do need a special certification for them, but it is worth the effort as you can dive longer and more challenging dives. You can enjoy ice diving with a drysuit.

In additions to wetsuits/dry suits, a dive shop will almost certainly have other scuba diving apparel – but not the kind anyone wears underwater. Hats, jackets and t-shirts with the diving logo abound. Most divers love to go around in a t-shirt or hat announcing their skills and their hobby. You may also turn to the Internet. T-shirts especially come with cute jokes like a pair of diving tanks with “lungs of steel” written underneath.

* Be Creative and Have Fun

Whether purchasing scuba diving apparel for yourself or someone else, keep in mind the love of the sport. Scuba diving is not undertaken by the faint of heart and most divers are rightly proud of their participation in such and intriguing and adventurous sport. So wear or give your scuba diving apparel with pride and enjoyment.

Copyright © 2010 Scuba-Diving-Heaven. Visit the original article at http://www.scuba-diving-heaven.com/how-to-judge-a-snorkel.html.

Snorkels are wonderful pieces of equipment that can be used before, after or instead of a dive as appropriate. Often if you want to go exploring right after an airplane trip (or before one), snorkeling is often recommended.

As a scuba diver you already have the mask and fins, so going snorkeling just requires a great snorkel. But, what makes a great snorkel?

Here are the features you want to have:

Can be used to breathe underwater (ie: NOT a toy) – I didn’t want to put this one in, but I’ve heard of people being surprised. So, to cover all essential features, I added it.

Mouthpiece Fits Your Mouth – you want it to be comfortable. An angled mouthpiece helps it be more comfortable. An exchangeable mouthpiece can be a nice feature — but can be much more expensive.

Right Size Tube – A larger diameter tube will allow for very easy breathing, but they are more difficult to clear of water. A bigger blast of air is needed to fill the tube with enough volume and pressure to expel any accumulated water. Purge valves help clearing – so this feature is not as important if your purge valves work.

Right Length Tube – longer snorkels allow you to go deeper. However, they are also harder to keep upright. Doesn’t matter much if getting a dry snorkel (see next point).

Dry Snorkel – These snorkels have valves (or flaps) that prevent water from entering if you dive underwater. This allows you to dive below the level of your snorkel for a few moments until you need your next breath without water entering.

Purge valve – having a purge valve really helps clearing the snorkel if water enters. Water will automatically drain when you get near to the surface.

Snorkel Keeper – using snorkel keeper helps you not lose your snorkel as it is attached to your mask. This can be purchased separately

Though you can buy a cheap snorkel, generally, it won’t be a dry snorkel and it won’t have a purge valve. Often cheaper sets are of lesser quality – so read reviews carefully. This can make for a very on comfortable snorkeling trip. We recommend a quality a dry snorkel with purge valves and an angled mouthpiece.

Copyright © 2010 Scuba-Diving-Heaven. Visit the original article at http://www.scuba-diving-heaven.com/using-a-scuba-diving-tank.html.

The scuba diving tank is the most essential piece of diving equipment. Without access to the compressed air that the tank holds divers would not be able to stay submerged for any prolonged period of time. For this reason it is critical that any diver know the basics of maintaining, regulating and monitoring the scuba diving tank.

Contrary to common belief, a scuba diving tank is not just an oxygen tank. In fact, it could be referred to more accurately as a nitrogen tank since a scuba diving tank actually contains 21 percent oxygen and 79 percent nitrogen. This is the same mixture that you breathe normally when on land. Pure oxygen would be deadly, especially at shallow depths. Compressed air, on the other hand, is toxic only beyond 200 feet, thus making it safe for recreational diving.

* Specifications of a Scuba Diving Tank

Most of the time, a recreational scuba diving tank will be made out of aluminum and can in fact contain 80 cubic feet of air that is compressed into an area of two feet in height and six inches in diameter. Eighty cubic feet of air is normally filled from 2000 to 3000 psi (pounds per inch) of air pressure. In addition, the scuba diving tank is regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as well as some other foreign agencies and regulations that necessitate that the scuba diving tank be inspected periodically as well as undergo pressure tests to ensure maximum safety for the diver.

To use a scuba diving tank, one must ensure that it is filled from a reputable dive shop and one should inquire as to where the shop compressor’s air intake pipe is and make sure that it is properly located. Since air expands when it exists in hot conditions do not leave the filled tank in a heated up car.

* Transporting Scuba Diving Tanks in Cars

Special precautions need to be taken when transporting a scuba diving tank or pony bottle. If the valve on a scuba diving tank gets damaged, the tank would be propelled in the opposite direction.

The most important thing to do is to wedge your tank between other items in the rear of your vehicle to make certain the tank will not move.

If there are multiple tanks, make sure that they are not able to touch each others valves.

We recommend having them face the front of the car for safety reasons, though sometimes others have them facing back for easier removal from the vehicle.

Another important precaution when moving your scuba diving tank is to inspect the O-ring for any defects. This can be done by removing the protective valve cap.

* Traveling by Air with your Scuba Diving Tank

To be able to fly with your scuba tank or pony bottle, you must first empty them and remove the valve. The regulator must be completely removed from the cylinder and the cylinder is unsealed. In case the rules change in the future, here are the TSA Rules for Transporting Scuba Tanks. Printing this out for air travel is recommended.

* Scuba Diving Tank Safety Tips

Here are a few easy safety reminders for your scuba tank:

Treat your tank with care: avoid sudden impacts and dents as this is going to be your life line underwater.

Securing your tank when possible is recommended so it doesn’t get knocked over (and possibly damaged).

Always make sure seals are clean (regulator and tank valve) before attaching. You want to be certain sand is not present.

There are many more important safety steps that should be accounted for when handling your scuba diving tank. You will need to receive instructions from a certified trainer to ensure that you know all the pertinent information to handle your scuba diving tank correctly.
